What is Yoga?

iStock 000003484371XSmallHeard a ton about yoga but not really sure what it is and how it relates to you? Wondering if it's something that will benefit you? Yoga is about creating balance by building strength and flexibility of the body, mind and spirit.

There are many different forms of Yoga which can be confusing for the beginner but for the most part all forms of Yoga have the same end in mind. Strength and flexibility of body, mind and spirit. The physical part of yoga is accomplished by practicing the various poses or “Asanas” with awareness and focus.

Each Asana has a different  focus or physical benefit. Since it is for body, mind and spirit, Yoga involves not only physical movement and strength training, but also deep breathing and a form of meditation. This allows your full self to engage and benefit from each posture.

How is Restorative Yoga Different from typical yoga sessions?

Restorative Yoga, sometimes called Restful or Gentle Yoga, concentrates on assuming postures that are free from exertion and effort.  This minimizes the potential for any further stress to your body if you are already in a highly stressed state.

Your body is positioned in way that allows for stretching and lengthening and the postures are maintained with the use of props which can include blankets, ties, chairs, blocks, pillows, anything that will support your body and allow for minimum effort and deepest relaxation.

Restorative Yoga is more restful than simply taking a nap, your mind calms and your nervous system is invited to achieve complete balance as your body lets go and finds a sense of peace and ease.

Restorative Yoga is perfect for individuals recovering from illness or trying to re-balance an overwhelmed or over stressed system. It allows for deep relaxation and integration of the nervous system.

If you and I are working on finding ways to balance your nervous system and relieve or manage stress, then you can bet we will be including some lovely, peace-inducing restorative yoga postures.
