Asparagus are a packed with oligosaccharides

Holy Oligosaccharides!!

What the heck is an oligosaccharide and why should you care if you eat enough of them? The simple answer is that an oligosaccharide is a type of carbohydrate. However, let’s just start by stating that all carbohydrates are not created equal. Typically the pop culture health world thinks of carbohydrates as sources of quick fuel for the body. Something to be monitored, minimized and even in some diet venues, loathed. But it is important to know that carbohydrates or ‘carbs’ as they are often most affectionately known, do much more than just provide energy. Many carbs are critical components of your body’s intricate communication system.

Did you know that much of the communication between your immune system cells occurs through a sugar that is found on the surface of your cells? Keep in mind that when speaking about sugar in this case we mean the molecular component, not necessarily the kind found in your cupboard.  That little sugar is a carbohydrate that is critical to your immune system function. That same sugar is also critical to your digestive health. That little sugar is the mighty oligosaccharide and it packs a big punch. Oligosaccharides are unique from other carbohydrates because they resist digestion in the small intestine and therefore, reach the large intestine intact. Once in the large intestine they are consumed by the ‘friendly’ bacteria that are waiting patiently to be fed so they can fulfill their function and keep you healthy. When adequately fed these bacteria help keep the large intestine free from disease. As dinner for these helpful bacteria, oligosaccharides help enhance your body’s probiotic levels. Other strands of oligosaccharides find their way to your immune system and coat the surface of your immune cells enabling the cells to recognize each other and communicate more effectively. On a large system basis this helps your body repair tissue, heal from illness, respond more effectively to stress and generally enjoy a more robust immune function.

How do you get more of these little gems in your diet? The only way is by eating unprocessed, complex plant based carbohydrates. There are a few foods that contain all the different types of oligosaccharides, such as burdock root, asparagus and onions. Other foods contain just certain varieties of oligosaccharide such as Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, rye, and bananas. So, the next time you are wondering what to eat, for the good of your WholeSelf health, remember to eat your olies!
